Regional Consultation Workshop on “Bridging the Climate Information and Communication Gaps for Effective Adaptation Decisions: An Integrated Climate Information Management System (ICIMS)

 A Regional Consultation Workshop on “Bridging the Climate Information and Communication Gaps for Effective Adaptation Decisions: An Integrated Climate Information Management System (ICIMS)” was held on 21 & 22 June 2016 at Galadari Hotel, Colombo. The workshop was organized by the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS) with South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE), Janathakshan Gte Ltd and the Department of Meteorology of Sri Lanka (DOM).

The primary objective of the workshop was to identify the different models of ICIMS that combine the strengths of decision criteria used by farmers, CIP providers and policymakers for successful outcomes of adaptation. Around 35 participants representing Bangladesh, India, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Pakistan & Thailand were attended the workshop. 

Janathakshan undertakes an assignment to conduct district level training programmes on controlling and managing of Invasive Alien Species (IAS)

Janathakshan Gte Ltd has undertaken an assignment of UNDP under the project “Strengthening Capacity to Control the Introduction and Spread of Alien Invasive Species in Sri Lanka”. With this initiative Janathakshan is to conduct district level training programmes on controlling and managing of Invasive Alien Species (IAS) so that the district level stakeholder agencies such as relevant government officers, NGO’s, media and CBOs would be able to identify and manage IAS. Janathakshan will conduct total of 08 district level training workshops covering Central and North Western Provinces of Sri Lanka.

Bridging the Climate Information and Communication Gaps for Effective Adaptation Decisions: An Integrated Climate Information Management System

Janathkshan Joins hands with Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) of Sri Lanka & Meteorological Department of Sri Lanka to implement a research project on bridging the climate information and communication gaps for effective adaptation decisions.

Asymmetries in knowledge and information between farmers on the one hand and policy makers on the other, and the communication gaps that may arise as a result, could lead to inefficiencies in the overall process of adaptation to climate change.  One way to overcome these gaps is by establishing Integrated Climate Information Management Systems (ICIMS) that can harness both the strengths of local knowledge systems and advances in modelling techniques in climate sciences. This project aims to improve the effectiveness of adaptation decisions of farmers and policymakers/experts by establishing and pilot-testing models of ICIMS that combine the strengths of decision criteria used by farmers and other policy stakeholders in Sri Lanka. By increasing the availability and use of appropriate climate information, the project aims to demonstrate interventions that can reduce the vulnerability of farming community to climate risks while improving the overall adaptive capacity of all stakeholders involved. Hence the project will address the communication as well as the information gap between technical agencies and farming communities.
